I wish the two of you could see Mesmerizer in my garden. You might think
more favorably towards those of us who voted for it to win the Dykes.

My bed of it is running late this year, as are my rebloomers. Typically
I get a stalk in late December or early January, and by mid-February
have enough stalks to have continuous bloom into late May. Throughout
March and April the bed is a sight most iris can match only during their
best week. Two solid months of looking good enough I want to drag people
over to see it.

And the only time I have had a horizontal stalk was when a rhizome tried
to bloom before the roots were firmly established, and the whole thing
tipped over.

Admitted negatives: more recent SpaceAgers have wider hafts; although it
propagates well, it does not form big clumps--rhizomes bloom too soon,
making it hard for iris sellers with customers who expect big rhizomes.

Anyhow, this topic demonstrates very well why iris an award can not be
used as a recommendation for that iris in a particular climate. It's an
interesting problem. I could imagine having say 4 zones in the US, each
with veto power, and ending up with a Dykes winner that grew everywhere,
but missing the best in each area. That might be better in some ways
than the current country-wide system, but not in others. I foresee a
system, official or otherwise, that publicizes more local favorites. The
Bulletin could not handle all of the date--the web can.

Gerry, done rambling
