Re: Re: status update 28Jan04

Walt,
Thank you for telling of your background.  Sounds like you have just the kind of skills we need to help guide the SAGE process along.

My own acquaintance in the field of genetics and plant physiology comes primarily from watching seedlings emerge from known family lines, and from working with ornamental shrubs and commercial orchards.  Just for the fun of it I arranged for a "one-hour" Readings & Conferences in Cytogenetics a very long time ago.  My college classes in the biological realm never mentioned DNA--that's how long ago I received my education.  It was contemporary with the seminal work of Watson and Crick, about whom I first heard in the R&C.  Already, work with sequencing was beginning its astonishingly rapid development.

On one occasion I happened to mention to the head of the Dept. that I wanted to see the full sequence from a DNA sequence to a visible characteristic and he said, "You are about five hundred years too soon."  If only he could see what is happening now.

Glad you are with us, Walt.  Please don't hesitate to make suggestions, agree or disagree with anything said, especially from my ramblings.  Often I speak from imagination fed by ignorance.  I don't take being set straight with anything other than gratitude.
