I sure wish the form of Widdershins was that good for me, Bill. It isn't especially good here, and I haven't had the heart to use it for crosses. Roberts' SHOPTALK, however, is one I like very much, and it has form, substance, branching and bud count.
Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is.-Will Rogers
Rehashin' some old stuff with different words, we think differently. We already know likely because of the difference in or knowlege bases, skill sets we bring to the table, tools, and space with which we have to work.
One of the values of intuitive hybridizing beyond laziness is that it makes accepting the arguable premise that almost any iris will give seedlings that yield stellar performance somewhere and maybe even everywhere easy. Also with me accepting as pretty much fact most of the irises being introduced today give stellar performance under only a fairly narrow range of enviorenmental paramenters suggests to me that I would be limited to some rather dated flower forms and patterns if I sought in a serious way to overcome the limitation.
Taking this a step further, limiting crosses to only parents that do well at a specific location, taken to its logical conclusion, will result in a line of irises that will do well most likely only in that location.
Being lazy, I choose instead to weight my admittedly intuitive approach in crosses among introductions from hybridizers whose body of work I have respect, while still trying to overlook none of the irises present regardless- giving every iris represented here some opportunity to have me brag on, or cuss, its children. I work toward third generation outcomes.
Possibly, we could all be throwin' the baby out with the bath water from parent selections to seedling selections. Seems the only thing to to do is keep 'em. Keep 'em all. Keep 'em all til God has time to sort 'em out.
Efficient? Not at all! Fun? Boocoodles!
Spect ole Will that opened here mighta' been some wrong. Why is he climbin' a tree and crawlin' out on that limb when the fruit will fall to the ground if he just waits? He never did say. Could be he was hungry... or tryin' to get his stuff to the market first. That boy needed some lazy.
Smiles,
Bill Burleson
