Re: [SpaceAgeRobin] HYB: Questions

Good Morning,

I have a lot of questions concerning Iris genetics and traits.
First, I know nothing of Iris genetics but assume some are similar
to Daylily traits. Which parent tends to pass along traits of plant
habit and bud count? With daylilies, it tends to be the pod parent
and color and form from the pollen parent.

Iris traits are similar to similar to daylillies but a hundred times more complicated because of all the different species involved

The only trait linked to a pod parent is varigated foliage. My personal feeling is that the pod parent has a greater effect on overall plant size than the pollen parent.
Can Iris pollen be saved or frozen, and if so, how?

I have seen mentioned Diploid and Tetraploid. I understand the terms
and how they apply to lilies but not Iris. I don't see it mentioned
in Iris catalogs, so how do you know which is which? Do Dips only
cross with Dips etc.

DIPs and TETs are the same in iris as in daylilies.  Iris do differ from daylilies in that any TB produced after the early 60's should be considered a TET.
I did order 15 SA from Nola's Iris website. They are mostly older
ones but I can't find many sites that sell SA. If you can recommend
some, I would appreciate it. Also, please recommend any SA which
tend to be good parent plants.

Thank you

Will and Bill Burlson have first hand knowledge of what grows well in your climate. I would say that it is best you follow their recommendations for iris and sources.

Good selection for a beginning . Good color variety and all known as sturdy growers. My recommendation would be DAUBERS DELIGHT  as the best parent in the group.
