Ruth, a most hearty welcome!
As to sources of space age irises in general, considering your location
in Idaho at 4b climate, you might consider hardy location suppliers such
as the Idaho, Utah and Colorado growers, midwestern suppliers such as in
Nebraska or Iowa, or Snowpeak Iris and Daylily in Lebanon, OR in the
Willamette Valley.
Even though western Oregon is a great deal milder than you are,
Snowpeak's on-line catalog has a number of photos, and does plainly mark
rebloomers (RE), space age (SA) and other variations from ordinary
one-season TB's. I would expect you to have little trouble with climate
adaptation if you order and plant early.
Importing irises from mild climate locations may or may not be an
entirely satisfactory exercise, but two major suppliers of quality stock
that have many very good SA irises are Superstition Gardens and Sutton's
in California. Both are developing many new, very good varieties.
Superstition's Solar Fire is spectacular.
There is a long list of commercial suppliers on a link from the American
Iris Society's website at http://www.irises.org/links.htm --click on
"Commercial Directory...." A number of the Idaho folks are listed, such
as Blue Cloud, Winslow and Riverview.
There is a lot of iris information on the AIS website in addition to the
page for which I've supplied the URL above, which you may enjoy browsing
later.
The one Idaho grower that specializes in SA irises is Keith Chadwick at
Sandhollow, between Caldwell and New Plymouth. He has a lot of very
interesting looking things but is not listed in the AIS directory. I
believe there is a web site, but I do not have a URL for it.
There may be several BB SA's, but I know of few if any SDB's.
Introducing SA characteristics into IB and SDB types is an interesting,
and worthy, objective. You might find initial success limited, but who
can say? The genetics of SA's is not at all well understood--that is
why you will find numerous references to "SAGE" (Space Age Genetics
Endeavor, or Effort, or Exploration, that "E" isn't firmly settled on
any one word yet). SAGE is a project spanning several years and several
nations to try to pin down how SA characteristics are inherited.
Three Dykes Medal winners have been SA TB's. Thornbird, Conjuration and
Mesmerizer are very widely circulated. That most beautiful of them,
perhaps, is Conjuration. That's a matter of taste and opinion, of
course.
Many members of this list would be happy to answer questions, offer aid
or advice, information or suggestions. You will find yourself most
welcome!
