The current (Fall 2005) issue of *Tall Talk* has some very significant
articles and photos about SA's.
On p. 8ff, Vincent Christopherson's "Searching for Space Age Appendages"
reviews his history with SA breeding.
I found especially significant his comments and photos about other
apparently SA-related elaborations of the bloom, inside standards and in
or with the style arms. These may have considerable genetic
significance and need to be noted in our SAGE records. His comments
about BSE's (referred to as "vestigial horns (sometimes called crests),"
mentioning several varieties by name that show the Advance Guard-style
beard extension, substantiates other observations about varieties
showing these characteristics being particularly fruitful in SA seedling
counts.
Another article by the Jedlikas on p 18ff shows a photo of sdlg Jeda
4-37K1 with elaborations of flounces, showing SA flounce-type
elaborations inside the standards along with the very well developed
flounces on the falls. Some siblings and half-siblings also had the
feature. The parent in common is one of their own SA pink seedlings,
the parentage of which is not mentioned.
These kinds of features accord with some speculation I have been giving
to SA traits originating with the controls of floral initiation in the
embryonic- or stem- (by analogy) cell genetic changes that take place as
rhizome/root-leaf genetics give way to bloomstalk/bud control enzymes.
Very complex changes in gene sets appear to be shut off, others switched
on as this change-over takes place.
The study of this process in flowering plants is in its infancy, and I
am reasonably certain that a full understanding of SA phenomena will
emerge only as the understanding of the processes and enzyme controls
involved grow toward maturity.
In the meantime we can contribute toward SA genetic understanding
particularly with careful and thorough record keeping and cross
controls.
