Hi, Havi.  You know, that is a good idea - I have done the same thing to
get seeds to germinate when I didn't know what their specific requirements
were.  Those tough-to-germinate types (such as certain wildflowers) usually
sprout at least 10% (which is still better than 0) when treated in such a
way.  Perhaps the lettuce, like many purple plants, is a little less
vigorous and just is a pickier germinator.  Thanks.
