Re: Newspaper Pots

Michael,
I read about this on the list and tried it for the first time this
year. It has worked great for me and I'll never use peat pots or
regular pots again for growing seedlings. I experimented with different
sizes of newspaper pots and the larger ones (1 lb. coffee can size) hold
together just as well as the smaller ones. There's a gadget you can buy
to use in making them, but I just used cans of vegetables that were the
size I wanted. For some of the small pots I made I used a spice bottle
and for the large pots I used a coffee can. I made my newspaper strips
long enough to wrap around my can about 3 times and I also made my
strips wide enough to fold them in half before wrapping. I put one
small staple in them to hold them together. The only problem I've had
with the newspaper pots is I had some mold start growing on the outside
of the pots in this one tray where the pots were touching. Spacing them
1/2 inch apart has eliminated that problem though.
