It's sort of a California thing I guess.  Even with all the effort 
expended by CA chile-heads, they've yet to be able to set the record 
straight with supermarkets and/or the average consumer.

Indeed.  To me, they're a frequent replacement for green bell peppers 
and, IMO, much tastier.
