Re: Cucumber "Lemon"

Dear Jennifer,
I grew the Lemon Cucumber in pots when we lived in northern CA, they looked a bit odd but they tasted good and the skin was very edible. I don't think any made it in the house as we would hose them off and eat them while we were outdoors.  The harvest was low because they were in pots probably and we didn't trellis them; our vines stayed small. Probably because of the pots.
Good growing,
mum
Has anyone ever planted Cucumber "Lemon" before?  A friend is from California
and suggested this variety to me.   I have never trellised cucumbers before but if the vines are short on
this variety I will.  Any suggestions?  Also has anyone saved seeds from this
variety before?

Lemon cucumber is an heirloom variety also known as "Apple" cucumber. The
fruit are round with yellow/green skins. I find this variety doesn't need to
be peeled, the skins are so thin.

I haven't saved seed from the variety but it should be fine. The fruit goes
a dark orange when it's fully ripe so you'll know when to harvest them for
seed.

If you don't have a trellis, you can try growing the plant in a tomato cage
since the vines do get a bit long.

I did find that the plants were sensitive to cool weather. They grew really
well when we had a hot summer a few years ago but last year, we had lots of
rain and the plants didn't produce as much.

Arzeena, some may call the lemon cuke "apple," but it's quite a different
critter than the Crystal Apple cucumber. Margaret L
