Re: veggie-digest Digest V102 #5

Dawn,I just purchased a old Ag.bulletin,on hotbeds and coldframes. It is old and
has the old ways in it,which I love. One idea is they use,as large a box frame
as you want, with maybe some old window units,or as in the older times
burlap, and plastic to cover, anything for holding temperature. Now,here's the
trick, dig below the freeze level,a couple feet, and get enough green or fresh
horse manure, put maybe a foot of hay(or not),now about 2-3 foot of the horse
manure, then maybe 1-2 foot of some good soil, even some of the compost from
maybe Lowe's or someone,its cheap,on top.Now,the wet hrse manure,provides the
heat, and you control the air, with the covers.Really anything will
grow, onions, squash, really all cool crops etc.I live in 8b,and had a great
garden all winter, since Sept.,and now trying a small greenhouse, with some
trials and errors.I have turnips,mustard,brussel
sprouts,cabbage,onions-2-multiplying,and large red,rutabeggars,collards,still
going, love the warmer weather.Have fun,I will try one of these next winter.Jim
