Re: Stan's hot tomato

Speaking of Christmas Tree bulbs, I have read where a woman in Ohio is
growing a palm tree (hardy to 5F, about 15F higher than the average low
winter temperature in her area) outside - in the two coldest months, she
surrounds the plant with 12' high straw bale walls, which she then strings
with Christmas lights. Obviously, this would warm the air around the tree,
and I imagine that the soil would also be warmed by radiant heat; even
though heat rises, the proximity of the soil to the warmed straw bales
would have to promote at least some heat transfer. Tomatoes being
considerably more shallow rooted than a palm tree (I believe the tree was
about 11' tall when I read about it), perhaps the soil would be warm enough
for them without having to bury the lights. I'm not trying to get you to
ditch your experiment...but if it needs refining, maybe this will add to
the idea mill for next season.
