shallot seeds

Could somebody please tell me if they have been sucessful growing shallots (not spring onions) from seeds. I am able to buy the bulbs but they are very expensive.
I used to pickle the onions eons ago and would like to accomplish the whole kit'n'caboodle myself. I would appreciate your help.
