Hi Dotti,
I grew Ambition shallots here in Vancouver (the
seed was from Territorial) and it was the best crop of any type of onion I ever
had! I often have trouble keeping onion seed going but this variety was
really hardy and refused to die.
I planted them in February, indoors, and grew them
under lights until early April (our last frost is about April 15). Planted
them outdoors, kept them well watered and weeded and they grew really
well. Most of the shallot bulbs were the size of elephant garlic cloves
and that was just from growing organically. No chemical fertilizers, just
some composted manure early in the season.
It was so easy, I guess the only thing preventing
people from using seed is starting it early enough.
