I just found a neat list of Beneficial Companion flowers and herbs to
grow with vegetables. I can't wait to try them. Has anyone found any
of these truly helpful ? They are to improve growth and many times
improves the flavor of the veggie.
Simplified list, and one's I want to try are:
Basil with Tomatoes and Peppers
[Gardening Nun in Monastery told me this also]
Borage with Beans and Strawberries
Carrots near peas
Chamomile with cucumbers
Dill with cabbage and onions
[keep them from carrots and tomatoes]
Flax with potatoes.
[deter Colorado potato beetle]
Garlic and Rue with roses
[garlic repels aphids, Rue repels ants]
[Rue useful with fruit trees it says]
Nasturtiums with squash and melons
[repels white fly]
Parsley with asparagus
Sunflowers with cucumbers
[keep away from potatoes]
This source: "The Western Garderer's Journal- A Three-Year Almanac",
by Margaret Moulton is just wonderful, and has other companions that
she mentions, but these are the one's I'm planning to plant in with
my crops this year. Winter time can be a great time to "think and
plan''. Fun, fun, garden will be functional and pretty.
Sincerely,
~Carleen~
