Much agree with you about Sweet 100s. It is hard to conceive of a more
trouble free, productive cherry tomato. I garden in the community garden
of a cooperative community in Bucks County PA & some 30 other
participant gardeners agree about Sweet 100s. The only reservation is
that they are sometimes almost too sweet. I find that the taste varies a
bit as the season progresses with the greatest sweetness at mid-season.
Those who want a tomato with a bit more tang like the Sungold, also a
great winner.
Some years ago I planted over 50 varieties of tomatoes and had them
judged on the basis of taste, skin, texture, juice etc. Sweet 100s were
uniformly judged as excellent in all categories. Some of the other big
winners were as follows Brandywine for geatest taste, Celebrity for good
appearance and overall good quality. Burpee's Supersteak , Romas for
tomato paste and drying , Early Girl and First Lady for very good
tasting early tomatoes.
Judged the worst were Big Girl & St Pierre. Among the Yellows there
were a lot of losers but I personally found Lemonboy very tasty but too
quick to rot & with a very short shelf life.
Home growers should all try Brandywines even though they look like hell
and last so short a time. Its one tomato that is not likely to find it
self on the shelves of the big supermarkets and only rarely at roadside
vendors. I always grow a few from a reliable seed vendor and some from
collected seed. I get almost 100% germination from the seeds I have
collected.
I start all my tomatoes under lights. For a full growth spectrum I use a
mix of the white shop lights and a few yellows.
How do you prepare your tomatoes for freezing? I dry mine with fair
success but I would like to try freezing some this year.
