Re: How Long Do Seeds Stay Good?

Dreambuilder,  because of the age of the seeds and because many of them I have no idea what they are I did two things.  One I set aside a section of both my vegetable garden and out in my flower patch where I sowed seeds directly into the garden labeled as well as I could and just watered and cared for them like any other seeds and waited to see what happened.  I also took some of the larger seeds and wrapped them in paper towels and layered them in a container which I then kept moist with warm water and placed on the window sill and checked every other day or so to see if they sprouted and how long it took.  Because of the drought and a knee injury last spring (Don't wrestle a 1200lb horse when he is in a bad mood) I got a late start so have only played with a few of the seeds - we will see what will over winter here in zone 4/5 and then since I have had such good luck with these next year it will be a full scale planting.  My grandmother was a scavenger of seeds and wherever she was she took seeds from the area - some of these are just listed as pink mountain flowers from Montana and then the year.  This is so fun to do.  It is probably the best legacy or inheritance that she could have done.  I will remember her everytime I look out my windows for the rest of my life.
