Dear
Suzanne,
It
won't do any harm to scrape a little soil away with your hand and see how far on
the crop is. If you really feel like it and you can risk losing one plant then
dig one up. If they do start to appear above the ground then just earth them up
and leave them for another week. The plant tends to tell you that they are
ready, they begin to look tired when the crop is nearing readiness and there is
nothing wrong with digging them up when they are on the small side. Here in the
UK I've been digging up a steady crop of latish earlies for about three or
four weeks. Remember green potatoes are poisonous, if you dig some up chuck
them out. Also make sure you get all of the potatoes out, even the small ones as
they will pop up year after year and give their own
problems.
Cheers
George.

Subject: Potatoes
This is my first year, and I'm a little concerned about them. I planted them in a raised bed and heaped grassy mulch on them until I thought it would all fall off the bed if I put any more on. Now the plants are huge, and I'm wondering if the potatoes are going to appear above the ground?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
