big shallots & other onions

Judy--was it you looking for clues to growing bigger shallots? I've been
reading up a little in order to write a Web piece on leeks & shallots for
my Vegetable Garden's new Thursday feature--coming on 7/10.

OK, shameless self-promo aside this is what I read about growing
shallots--(warning, not the wisdom of experience here, although I grow
great leeks :)

They need about 120 days of growing time so if you can't get them out in
the garden very early in the spring you can try starting the cloves in
shallow flats in a peat moss/coarse sand medium. When root system has
developed and top growth has appeared then transplant.

There are different varieties of shallot that come in different shapes and
sizes. Not clear which are the biggies but the "Jersey" variety yields
cloves with a diameter wider than its length--that might help in the peeling.

Soil should be high in P & K, not too much nitrogen. Light mulch is
recommended.

More to come as I continue rooting around for info.
Cheers,
Havi
