Thank you Havi--I'm surprised to find that yours is the only information I
got from inquiries to newsgroups and this list. I'm sure someone knows.
On a web search I did find one site that mentioned planting small bulbs
yielding larger bulbs--not so much splitting. I know this is supposed to
be true about onion sets. I wonder where most commercial shallots are
grown--maybe it's the weather, long season? I'd appreciate any further
