tomatoes-dying leaves

can anyone tell me what is going on with my tomatoes?They were doing really
well till about 2 weeks ago when the bottom leaves began turning yellow and
drying up. They have medium size green tomatoes on them and they look fine
so far. The variety is Celebrity
The same thing happened last year with the whole plants dying before the
fruit was finished maturing. (although we did get some ripe ones)
We took a soil sample to the local extension service for analyisis and used
the fertilizer they recommended. 
We are in zone 5 ,the thumb of Michigan, the soil is somewhat sandy with 2
large fir trees next to the garden. I know evergreens and gardens sometimes
don't go well together but the extension agent did not think there was a
problem with that. The garden gets watered regularly and my husband uses "
miricle grow" according to the directions.
Do any of you wise gardeners have any suggestions for us?
