I live in central PA and got my garden in late this year due to the wet
weather. My cold weather plants didn't go in until mid May but all seem to
be doing okay. I planted asparagus, strawberries (June and Everbearers),
and rhubarb. I'll have to wait till next year to any of these veggies. I
also put in Sugar snap peas, String beans (bush and pole), collards, yellow
onions, leaf lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel
sprouts, yellow bell peppers, hot yellow banana peppers, tomatoes (three
varieties, 22 plants) acorn squash, zucchini squash ( the regular plus a
round shaped variety), yellow straightneck squash, spaghetti squash, patty
pan squash, sugar baby watermelon and cantaloupe. Everything has come up
and is growing. We have had lots of rain and sunshine lately.
We also plant about 20 lbs of sweet corn (bodacious sp?) when our neighbor
puts in his feed corn. He plants the sweet corn at the edge of the field so
we and four or five of our neighbors can get at it easily. The neighbor
kids usually set up a stand and sell it along the road to earn some extra
money. We do freeze quite a bit of it. I have two daughters in college
nearby, plus a group of their friends have all asked to be on the veggie
list when I start passing out the extras. We also take a lot of extra
produce over to a retirement apartment complex where my mother-in-law lives.
She enjoys sharing the wealth with her neighbors. I just enjoy planting and
growing the veggies. I could never use all that I plant.
I made some trellises this year for my beans and tomatoes. I have to admit
they look pretty good. I just hope they are sturdy enough.
