What exactly is a female cucumber? >>

He's probably referring to gynecious (spelling?) hybrids, which produce
almost all female flowers. Most commercial pickle cukes today are these.

They are amazingly productive, since most of the flowers are capable of
producing fruit. However, they must have a small percentage of seed from
another variety (usually dyed a different color) to serve as pollenizers
("daddy" plants)

We supply honeybees for a number of cucumber , squash and melon growers.
One hive per acre is recommended. If we can get the bee into the blossom
twenty times we will have mostly straight, well-developed cukes. So the seed
company takes care of pollenizers, we take care of pollinators.

One of the farmers refered to me as "the pumpkin patch pimp."
