RAISED BEDS & COMPOST

Hello list....

I am new to your list by just a few days...so, let
me introduce myself. My name is Barbara and we
live in North Texas (west of Dallas/Fort Worth) in
a small town named Aledo. I believe we are in
Zone 7. We bought this house two years ago and it
came with a 5 section herb garden and a nice size
vegetable garden area - both raised beds..
However, the two years previous to us nothing was
done with it and it was invaded by "bermuda" grass
and wireworms! After formally getting the
wireworms diagnosed...I finally got a handle on
them by tilling the soil in the fall and spring
every three days for a month. The "bermuda" has
been a different story. I have pulled and pulled
until I thought I could pull no more!!! I was
able to get about 1/4 of it "bermuda" free and
that is where my strawberries and asparagus
reside.

A while back the original owners of the home came
by and suggested that we just dig it up and start
over again! *SIGH* --- they said that it was
filled with pure "mushroom compost"...nothing
else! Believe me the soil did look like "black
gold"....but a little invaded. This weekend we
rented a "Bobcat" and we dug it out....this area
is about a 450 square foot area.

Here is my question....can I fill this area up
with just compost...no bedding soil at all? Will
it be to "rich" for the veggie's I want to put in
this spring (tomatoes, zukes, beans, cukes,
etc.)? I am fearful of weed seeds if I get the
bedding soil/compost mix. Any suggestions would
really be appreciated. I apologize for the length
of this but I wanted to be sure I gave an accurate
account. BTW....that bermuda is UNBELIEVABLE :-(

Kind regards,
Barbara Gage
