Hi Carla,
My most successful plants have been started with the APS (Accelerated
Propogation System) which is like a miniature greenhouse. They can be
purchased through Garden Supply Co. (catalog) or in a K-Mart or WalMart.
They cost about $10 and are worth every penny. Sometimes, I have
almost 100 percent germination. Use a germinating mix which is almost
sterile, let your seedlings grow about 4 inches or so, then transplant
into a sterile pot. I use styrofoam cups with holes punched in the
bottom because I set them in a tray of water and later liquid
fertilizer. This entire unit is then placed under fluorescent tubes
for about 12 to 16 hours per day.
Of course, there are many other ways of starting seedlings which can
be located in a good book store like Barnes and Noble, in a major city
public library, or seek out your local Extension Agent in the
government section of your telephone directory.
I lived all over Indiana, have two degrees from IU and taught at
Columbus High School for six years. One of my best gardens was
located here.
Another suggestion is to subscribe to periodicals like Organic
Gardening or National Gardening. They contain a wealth of information
from all over.
I teach at Dine College, formerly Navajo CC in Tsaile, Arizona in the
northeastern part of the state. Elevation is 7,200 feet, very windy,
short growing season, summer drought, but gardens do thrive. I had a
bumper crop of tomatoes and chile peppers last year even in heavy clay
soil. You can overcome.
I started the Tsaile Garden Club which meets monthly and now we have a
regular newsletter, GREENACRE, to share our knowledge and experiences.
Let me hear about your experiences later on, OK.
Sincerely,
Dr. Norm Park, Pres., Tsaile (AZ) Garden Club
