Like all things in gardening, it is really a matter of what you want to
do personally. In principle planning in extreme is fine, in practice
there are so many things that can upset it that you often have to
abandon it. We had a considerable debate about planning and rotation on
another forum, people came up with 2 year, 3 year, 4 year ,even 5 year
rotation. The basic rules as far as I can see are try not to plant any
crops twice in succession in the same place, particularly brassicas, and
if you get onion white rot problems steer clear of that plot for onions
indefinitely. Apart from that it is helpful to follow legumes with a
leafy crop to take advantage of the nitrogen residues. Any more than
that, it's up to the gardener to decide. Above all if you can't or don't
want to plan a detailed rotation plan, don't let that put you off.
