Pat,
If your seed is already sprouting, I'd put it in soil as soon as you can.
Seeds do need oxygen and will eventually rot if left in water too long. Be
very careful that you don't break off the sprouting root and plant the seed,
shell & all.
You can plant the seed about 11/2-2 inches deep (I seem to recall that
persimmon seeds are quite big and won't have any problem at that depth. If
it's too shallow, it will dry out and that pretty much puts an end to
germination. Try to keep the soil moist but not soaking wet or you'll
encourage fungal growth. I usually cover the container with saran wrap
until I see something emerging.
