Therefore if the compost is only part way up the pot, rather than
burying too much of the plant stem/leaves, you could cut away the
surplus rim. It all comes back to the root idea(pardon the pun) that
plant roots don't readily overcome an abrupt change of medium, for
instance container plants especially when rootbound don't readily
penetrate the surrounding soil.
