Re: Radishes and carrots

Regarding radishes and carrots you might like to try this.

Fish box gardening

We are growing several crops in the large polystyrene boxes in which fish has been delivered to fishmongers. They are very light and a good size.
You will of course have to give them a thorough wash first, then fill with multipurpose compost into which we mix a scattering of a slow release (eg organic based) general fertiliser.
We have successfully grown radishes (space these out at about 1.5" spacing so you don't have to thin, this can be done in comfort on a table, using a pair of tweezers/forceps), spring onions, small carrots (rather slow to grow). Baby beet
 may be possible.
We have re-used the same compost three times, by then it is rather too full of roots but is fine for mulch etc. in the garden.
To convert to automatic watering, cut a letterbox-slit across under each end, just wide enough to force through a 4" wide strip of capillary matting something like 8" to 12" long. Pull through equally, fold the inside lengths inward and
lay inside a rectangle of capillary matting, then a rectangle of micro-perforated film (optional). Now fill with compost to the required depth.
Stand on top of a tray of water which is kept full, with the matting dangling in the water.
