No. take the plants out.
Regarding the smoke I have these suggestions
1. You can sometimes can get a forces surplus soldering iron for 24 volts.
Run this on a 12 volt battery
2. Use a 200+ volt iron on 110 volts if available, or through an
electronic dimmer of sufficient power rating, or if you get a competent
electrician to make you up a box with a diode of suitable rating in
line, any of these will keep the iron cooler and reduce or eliminate the
smoke.
3. As a last resort you could keep switching it off as soon as it is too
hot, on again when it begins to stick.
4 with any of these work out of doors, downwind.
