That would be a good conclusion if I had prepared all my planting beds the 
same.  But I didnt.  My pepper beds are out of the garden on the side of a 
hill,  and I did cheat on soil prep.  I think tho that you are right and the 
cool summer here did influence them somewhat.  The strawbs were definitely 
the result of my cavalier attitude.  I did no soil prep other than digging 
up.  When they didnt grow well,  I scrapped some compost and fertilizer into 
the soil and they began to perk up,  but much too late.  I think I will have 
good winter berries on these plants tho.  Just afew months late!  Better late 
than never.  

I might try that polytunnel idea for watermelon next summer.  They are just 
marginal here.
