Re: harvesting my veg.

I am pleased you had a good harvest, as indeed did I!! There is 
nothing like cutting a cauli a few mins before its cooked, is there? 
The same for all your veg.
However I think the reason your peppers and strawberries failed were 
mostly due to your cool conditions, not the soil preparation. If you 
sucessfully grew many other  veggies, then that is an indication that 
your soil is okay. I grow my peppers and other veg such as 
watermelons etc, in a polytunnel, where the temp is higher than in 
the veg plot. Same soil, higher ambient temp. Results, a really 
excellent crop. This Sunday I treated my dear wife to stuffed peppers, they were 
delicious!! Here in Yorkshire the Summers are mostly cool, so a small 
polytunnel is a good investment. Mine is 6' by 6' by 6' and can be 
closed off as needed. I can grow salad crops in the winter, if its a 
mild one!!!
