Barberry (Berberis)

I wonder if I am killing this plant with ignorance. Over the past
several years it has been the major hide-out for the many birds who
visit my sunflower feeder and I noticed quite a build up of shells
under the bush this spring which I cleaned out as well as I can
without pruning. I have also been liming this bush 2x a year for the
past several years, but it seems to me that the bush was doing better
without my intervention and without the thick layer of shells. This
is a deciduous form which seems reluctant to produce many leaves this
year although the branches look healthy.

Any suggestions? Thank you,
