NEW MAILING LIST SERVER AT MALLORN.COM
Urbana (MP) Mallorn Computing, Inc, home of the perennials, prairie, and
woodyplants email lists, is upgrading its mail server to provide increased
productivity and service for subscribers tonight.
Mallorn Computing's President, Christopher Lindsey, says "this faster server
should significantly increase the rate of email transmission for members
of our lists. This new machine is at least eight times as fast."
The server will also be running the latest version of majordomo, the
software used to manage various mailing lists. This new version should
provide better protection against unsolicited emails, as well as better
authentication for initial subscribers.
The server upgrade began several days ago, but should be complete tonight.
Says Lindsey, "We started moving majordomo over to the new server a few
nights ago, and hopefully in a transparent fashion. There's always a
few hiccups, but I think that this will be a relatively smooth transition."
The server is on loan from Ithilien Computer Corporation, an Urbana-based
computer hardware company specializing in the construction of PCs for
free UNIX operating systems.

A letter from the list owner, Christopher Lindsey:
Lately, I've noticed that the list is becoming chatty again. There's
absolutely nothing wrong with that, but people should remember that
whatever they send goes out to the other 300 members of the list.
For private responses, check the email headers and see if you can
just send mail to that single address instead of to the entire list.
Another problem that has been creeping up on occassion involves
staying on topic. Most of the subscribers have been REALLY good
at this, but every once in a while someone new strays from the
path of righteousness (or something like that). Anyhow, remember that
we're here to discuss perennials. Indoor gardening, annuals, favorite
species of birds, etc. are all not applicable to the list's primary
purpose.
I must say that it's been a blast so far, and I hope to keep
having fun (even if I seem a little too nit-picky).
Chris
P.S. Included below are the standard rules that list members are sent
upon subscription.
====================================================================
RULES OF LIST USE

and a common area can be set up.
o Users must respect other users and the content of this list. We
reserve the right to remove users from this list if they cannot

SUGGESTED CHANGES
Another letter from the list owner, Christopher Lindsey:
Lately, there have been a lot of messages sent to other members of
the list asking where they are located, what type of climate, etc.
It has been suggested that subscribers to the list append to their
messages their hardiness zone and type of climate (rainfall, or
at least a city name).
I know that I'm just as guilty of this (if not moreso) than anyone
else, but making simple adjustments like this could really help
benefit the quality of information on this list.
Another suggestion that someone had was adding your email address
after your messages with the hardiness zone. Many subscribers can't
look at message headers to find out who the original sender was, so
they send private mail to the entire list. If they had a visible
address to use, they could reply more appropriately.
I'm going to try doing this from now on -- each message that I send
should have my email address, hardiness zone, and the city that
I garden in. I encourage you all to do the same.
