From my recent Western Garden Book:
Quercus:
Q.bicolor Swamp White Oak Zones 1-3
Q. coccinea Scarlet Oak Zones 1-11 Roots grow deep Fine to garden under.
Q. gambelii (Q. utahensis) Rocky Mt. White Oak Zones 1-3
Q. lobata Valley Oak, Calif. White Oak. Zones 1-9
Q. macrocarpa Bur Oak, Mossy Cup Oak Zones 1-11. Similar to Q. bicolor
but faster growing.
Q. palustris. Pin Oak All zones. [ It's a black oak.]
Q. rubra Red Oak, Northern red oak. Zones 1-12 [Another black oak]
Macrocarpa and palustris you remembered. Palustris 'fine tree for lawns'
seems to indicate deep roots.
Don't want to type up the whole page, but ask if can answer more. The zones
mentioned are Sunset zones, not USDA.
Good luck. Carol
