The petioles of mine are also red only on the top.  I've scanned one of the
leaves.  You can see it at:  http://www.execpc.com/~llmen/mapleaf.jpg  Do
the leaves resemble this?  The total length from the base of the petiole to
the leaf tip is 9 inches.
