Hi Donna,
I grow several of these up here in frigid Wisconsin and find they couldn't
be much easier. Like herbaceous peonies, they need a season or two to
really get going. Mine bloom several weeks before the herbaceous ones and
except for some minor shaping, they don't need any trimming. Because of
their woody nature, I often plant a clematis at their base and let it
clamber up through the foliage for additional color throughout the year.
The only other factor that you might want to get advice on is their need
(or lack of need) for chill time. I've heard that herbaceous peonies don't
do well in the Deep South, but I don't know if the same is true for the
tree peonies. I'm sure there are others on the list that will give you
good info on that.
The word from this "horse" is to go for it. They're gorgeous!
