Why are you prunning at all???
Are you prunning for more branching?
I think people prune way too often and this can cause plants to be slower.
Leaves are like engines; they produce energy for the plant. If you remove
stems that are going to support these "engines" the plant has to redirect
energy to heal itself and reproduce more stems for leaves. There are some
practical reasons for prunning. I am not against it at all. But I think
people manipulate their plants this way too often.
However, if you find that you need to prune, it is reputed to be better in
late winter, early spring, mainly I think because new growth caused by
pruning is more apt to freezing than hardened off, previous growth. Suckers
can be pruned anytime as far as I am concerned. However I am a grower in
Tucson, AZ and things are a bit different here than other places.
