Re: Erica & Flogging A Dead Horse

regarding "drought tolerant" Ericas:

Drought tolerant means a whole different thing here in Tucson, AZ. But I
have to say that even some of our most drought tolerant plants around
function totally different in containers. Container growing is a whole
different ballgame than growing a plant in the ground. For instance,
Leucophyllum species, a Texas native-Chihuahuan Desert-can last months
without water if established in the ground. But when the plants are in 1
gal., or 5 gal. containers, they need water every day in Tucson summers.
EVERY DAY. Doubtless that this is a drought tolerant plant, but not in a
container where temperatures are higher, root systems are limited to the
size of the container, etc...
Ericas are not drought tolerant plants for Arizona. The species I
have seen here croak without very close attention.
