Hi Steve,
It sounds like you might have Botrosphaeia canker or Phyophthora
root rot on your rhododendrons.
The former is a natural disease that may invade the plant through
fissures in the bark, and can usually be identified by little
pimples on the leaf surface. I'm not sure what treatments, if
any are possible.
The latter is much more treatable, usually resulting from poor
drainage. If the plant has been receiving too much water the
roots may begin to rot -- giving treatments with general
fungicides may prove to be helpful. I think I just used a
standard, water soluble mixture.
DO NOT turn the soil around the rhododendron at all -- they tend
to have shallow roots, so mixing in powdered fungicides could
do even more harm.
