Re: Gold Flame Spirea - deadhead?

Marilyn,

I don't grow this particular variety, but the ones I do have are fairly
prolific seeders. So, if yours has this tendency and you don't want
seedlings, then deadhead. If you don't like the looks of the dead flowers,
deadhead. If you don't care one way or the other, or would like seedlings,
then don't bother. For mine, and I have several varieties, it doesn't seem
to make any difference to bloom the following year. Mine bloom on new
wood. I have noticed that if I give them a fairly good haircut after bloom
I sometimes get a few stray flowers later in the season from new growth.
Normally, I will trim back in very early spring or late winter, if I get
around to it at all.
