Re: Understory Plantings and Pink Potentilla

You're welcome, Denise.

No, Ilex opaca and winterberry aren't the same. In fact, I have seldom
seen berries on the I. opaca in our woods, although somebody must be making
them because there are seedlings popping up here and there! Winterberry is
Ilex verticillata. It's also hardy for you, Dirr says it is slow in youth
but can be induced into faster growth with fertilizer and water. It is
deciduous, so should be able to take the winter winds better than an
evergreen.

Mahonia aquifolium is also called Oregon Grapeholly. M. bealei is
Leatherleaf Mahonia.

The Euonymous would take both the wind and dryness I should think. The
others I mentioned wouldn't be so crazy about either condition.

Sorry I can't help you with the pink potentilla. I've tried them and they
really hate my hot, humid climate.

Good luck finding the perfect plant for your conditions.
