Lilacs, color change?

Greetings,

Since there seem to several people present who know their lilacs, this
seems like a good time to ask a question I've been puzzeling over since
this spring. Four years ago, I bought some very nice white lilacs -
expense, but nice - and they have bloomed nicely every year. Well,
almost every year! This year the bloomed, but in a light lilac color
instead of white! Apart from aliens abducting my expensive white lilacs
and replacing them with cheap Walmart plants, does anyone know what might
cause this? They have been growing same place since they were first
planted and the only change in their growing environment is that last
fall I mulched about 3 feet around them using a generic shredded hard
wood mulch.

I know that flowering color in a number of plants is sensitive to pH;
is flower color in lilacs pH sensitive and could my application of
3" of generic, shredded hard-wood mulch changed the pH of my heavy
clay soil enough to cause this?

Any and all suggestions happily considered,

TIA
