I have about 20 lombardy poplars in our yard. I would like to make sure we always have these trees. There are plenty of suckers for transplanting but I am not usually successful in doing so. I have 3 good transplants and several not so good (tops die out and then they never really take off). Any sucker that comes up in a "good" position in my yard I let grow and it does fine. 1. When should I transplant (South Central Saskatchewan, Canada)? 2. What should I look for when choosing a sucker to transplant? 3. Is there some way to get a sucker ready for transplanting? 4. Some of my older lombardys (15 years) have some dull green leaves unlike the other dark green leaves ... any suggestions?
