Re: Climatis montana 'Pink Perfection'

In a message dated 98-07-24 16:34:15 EDT, you write:

disguises itself under the guise of "climatis," but
it certainly does not behave like ANY OTHER
climatis I have! Even my wisteria and celastrus
 scandens behave better! >>

Susan, Indeed, there are several Clematis species that are rampant growers.
C. montana is one of them. I've never grown it, but I do have the other
invasive species -- C. maximowicziana (Sweetautumn Clematis, which blooms in
the fall). Got my Sweetautumn as an unintended "gift" from my neighbor. Hers
is so vigorous that years after she thought she had removed it from her front
porch, it jumped across the lawn to the fence between our yards where it is
happily trying to consume the Honeysuckle she grows there. Now, if this stuff
can successfully compete with Honeysuckle -- need I say more?

As to getting rid of it -- good luck! I have pulled it out of my beds for
years. I keep an eye out for it and pull it when it is small. But one sneaky
strand so charmingly worked its way over our porch a few years ago and so
sweetly scented the entry in the fall that I have let it stay. I keep it
under control by removing the seed heads before they mature. This is easy
enough for me because it is by the front door where I can keep my eye on it,
and because my Felcos are almost a permanent attachment to my hand anyway. (I
never go out the door without my Felcos!) I also cut it to 6" from the
ground before spring comes again. But this one is a fall bloomer so it blooms
on new wood.

C. montana, I think, blooms in the spring, so probably on old wood. That
means you can prune it immediately after flowering, but at any other time it
would be at the expense of flowers. After that, I will leave the advice to
those who actually grow that species, as Clematis species vary a great deal in
pruning response. --Janis
