Re: Climatis montana 'Pink Perfection' -Reply

Susan, Indeed, there are several Clematis
species that are rampant growers.
C. montana is one of them. I've never grown it,
but I do have the other
invasive species -- C. maximowicziana
(Sweetautumn Clematis, which blooms in
the fall).

I have this as well and don't have nearly the
problems. It grows through a row of 15' tall
rhododendrons and I rarely have to deal with it.
It just grows on top of itself, doesn't reach out
to strangle every neighbor. It is in much poorer
soil, though.

C. montana, I think, blooms in the spring, so
probably on old wood. That
means you can prune it immediately after
flowering, but at any other time it
would be at the expense of flowers.

I agree. The problem would be, it would seem
to me, that even if it was *smaller* the new
growth will always reach to strangle the
neighbors. It's just so darn vigorous!

Thanks for responding.
