Hi Susan,
I'm not an expert in bonsai, but I do know that a loose translation of
the term means "tree in a pot." There's also a common misconception
that all bonsai have to be extremely diminuitive. In fact, there are
different size classifications for bonsai, and trees can be over four
feet tall ("hachi-uye bonsai"). It's not about miniaturization, it's
about capturing the essence of the tree in a limited space -- one
can enjoy the texture of the bark, the branch structures, and the
details of the leaves while enjoying the overall sense of the
tree. This is something not normally possible in nature.
If I remember, Styrax japonica does work well as a bonsai. I haven't
seen Cercis canadensis as a bonsai myself, but this Web page claims
that it's OK:

Even if you don't want to practice traditional bonsai methods,
these trees to appear to take well to pots if they're given food, water,
and regular pruning. :)
