In my old St. Louis garden, I cut the crepe myrtles to the ground in Feb
and had 5-7' flowering shrubs by Sept. The were in full sun, with good air
circulation. i considered myself very lucky. The I went to San Antonio
and saw crepe myrtle TREES! the mature bark is so lovely. I am now
growing a crepe myrtle in a large tub and bringing it into the garage in
the winter. There was no dieback at all this past season (I shall ignore
the fact that it was a mild winter).
I am also going to try L. 'Tonto', one of a group of hybrids that is
supposed to be trunk hardy in zone 6.
