Re: Roses, disease resistant


Matt, a belated thank you for your suggestions on roses.  I have made note of
everyone's recommendations and will ponder them until fall.  St. Louis  gets
pretty hot in July and August so it is best not to plant now.  

I did see the article about the Houston rose grower.  I don't remember which
magazine either.  

I have had the same experience you have with powdery mildew on roses.  Mine
never get it beacuse the black spot gets there first.  Powdery mildew doesn't
hit here until it gets hot and muggy.  By then the black spot is in full
force.  

As to your problem with powdery mildew on crape myrtle, just be glad you can
grow it.  Here it is practically an herbaceous perennial.  It dies back to the
ground in winter, and, only if the winter is mild, comes back in late spring
and never has the time to develop truly woody stems.  Mine rarely blooms.  I
keep one around in a protected spot anyway, just in case we have a good year.
