Does the upright one have leaves that are more needle-like? Like

If so, it could be Taxodium ascendens, which grows much more upright:

I have a bald cypress (straight species) in the backyard and I used
to get the same thing from my neighbors as well. Every fall they'd
tell me it was such a shame that my beautiful evergreen was dying.
I kept telling them it was a *deciduous* conifer, but oh well... :)
